“Sails of the spirit” – “Transforming the world through inclusive interaction”



From September 14 to October 3, 2019 the Mediterranean stage of the expedition “Sails of the spirit” with the support of the State atomic energy Corporation “Rosatom” will be held in Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt. The catamaran will cover the route Marmaris (Turkey) – Antalya (Turkey) – Kumkuyu (Turkey) – Tasucu (Turkey) Limassol (Cyprus) – Alexandria (Egypt) – Marmaris (Turkey). The expedition will include people with disabilities and people without disabilities from different cities and regions of Russia, Latvia, Sweden, Armenia and other countries.

The team of “Sails of the spirit” is engaged in the preparation and implementation of inclusive activities: yacht expeditions and regattas, social and cultural activities, in order to form a new positive model of interaction between people with disabilities and society.

Since 2011, inclusive (including people with disabilities) teams have been on fifteen expeditions in different parts of the world.

The goal of the “Sails of the spirit” project is the development of the inclusive yachting as an open model of manifestation of special talents and abilities of a person.

This year, the cities of the Mediterranean Sea will host Days of inclusion, which will include seminars on inclusive interaction, inclusive workshops and environmental events, flash mobs, round tables, inclusive concerts and training on inclusive sailing.

The team will be headed by Reinis Mezhulis, yachtsman of Riga yacht club “Auda”, multiple participants of the “Sails of the spirit” project. The ideological inspirer of the project and the head of the humanitarian program of the expedition is Oleg Kolpashchikov.

For the first time, the representative of Turkey, Ahmed Irdel, a visually impaired person will sail almost all stages of the Turkish part of the Sail of the Spirit expedition. Ahmed is a professional cook with 30 years of experience. He lost his eyesight 4 months ago after the operation. The team also includes his wife, Natalya Smychkova-Irdel, a fitness trainer, project manager of eco-camps for children.

The expedition takes place on the Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 M Lady Sophie sailing-motor catamaran, the crew of which includes 10 people with and without disabilities.

Among the activities outlined in the program were the following events: a practice-oriented seminar, an inclusive concert and joint sailing with representatives of Turkish organizations of people with disabilities.

September 20, at Mersin Davultepe Cocuk Evleri from 10.00 to 12.00 was held: a workshop on the theme “Transforming the world through inclusive interaction”, presentation of the Sails of the Spirit and an inclusive concert.

There were representatives of public organizations, journalists, representatives of organizations working with people with disabilities. Partners of the event: Mersin Ministry of Social Services, Mersin Society of Disabled Persons of Turkey, Mersin Autism Children Rehabilitation Society, Mersin White Crescent Society, Mersin Blind Society.

From 15.00 to 17.00 was held a meeting in the Akkuyu Nuclear Information Center with representatives of public organizations, Akkuyu Nuclear representatives, journalists. At the meeting were held a round table and presentation of the project “Sails of the spirit”. At the event were discussed options for a possible cooperation. A preliminary agreement on the implementation of joint inclusive projects has been proposed. At the suggestion of Turkish colleagues, the idea of creating fraternity community organizations of people with disabilities between cities Ekaterinburg and Mersin to create inclusive international social projects.
